The 3 Dosha and their qualities
Dosha is the energetic, structural and functional units of the human body.
The activities of the body can be classified as follow:
Any kind of movement
Various digestive and metabolic process
Growth, cohesivness, stability and composition
Vata Dosha
Movement, creativity and variability. Prone to dryness and cold;
support with warmth, regularity and oils.
Vata Dosha cannot be seen but we can experience it´s functions.
Qualities (Gunas) of Vata Dosha
Dry: Associated with dry skin, hair, and digestive issues.
Light: Vata is light in nature, leading to a slender body frame.
Cold: Vata individuals often feel cold and may have cold extremities.
Rough: Skin may feel rough or cracked, reflecting Vata´s influence.
Mobile: Govern all body movements, including digestion and circulation.
Clear: Is the wind that clear the clouds from the sky as well as the thoughts from the mind.
Subtle: Vata Dosha is invisible, but can be experienced from it´s functions
Quick: Vata types usually are quick learner but also quick to forget.
When in balance,Vata promotes creativity, flexibility,adaptability and joy
Vata aggrevation may manifest as constipation, abdominal distension,
sciatica, arthritis, insomnia, fear, anxiety, restlessness, and insecurity
Pitta Dosha
Transformation, heat and focus. Prone to intensity and irritation;
support with cooling, moderation and rest.
After ingestion of food, water, etc. these substances should be transformed
into something useful and usable for our system, with the help of metabolism.
This transformation, digestion, and metabolism are due to the activity of Pitta Dosha.
Qualities (Gunas) of Pitta Dosha
Hot: Associated with body temperature and metabolism.
Sharp: Penetrating quality affecting digestion and mental clarity.
Light: Medium build; can feel light and energetic.
Slightly Oily: Often results in oily skin and affects digestion.
Intense: Strong emotions and passionate nature.
Pungent: Linked to sharp tastes and preference for spicy foods.
Acidic: Affects digestion, leading to strong digestive fire (Agni).
Pitta dosha regulates digestion and metabolism, intelligence and sharpness of mind,
while regulating body temperature and energy levels.
Mental focus, vision, and colors are affected by the functioning of Pitta Dosha.
When in balance Pitta promotes understanding, intelligence, courage, ambition,
and luster of eyes, hair, skin and the body.
Pitta aggravation may manifest as perfectionism or anger.
One may become highly critical and develop physical symptoms such as inflammation,
acid indigestion, heartburn, diarrhea, dysentery, hives, rashes, or acne.
Kapha Dosha
Stability, lubrication and endurance. Prone to heaviness and sluggishness;
support with warmth, stimulation and lightness.
Proper nourishment is essential for repairing the wear and tear of everyday life.
Maintenance of the body with new tissues, protection of organs and structures,
cohesion between molecules, providing stability and growth are all functions of Kapha Dosha.
Qualities (Gunas) of Kapha Dosha
Heavy: Solid and robust physique.
Slow: Movement and metabolism tend to be slower.
Cool: Prefers warmth; discomfort in cold.
Oily: Skin is typically smooth and well-lubricated.
Stable: Provides structure and endurance.
Moist: Associated with hydration and lubrication.
When in balance, Kapha Dosha promotes cohesion that holds cells together.
It lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, maintains immunity, and expresses love,
calmness, loyalty, and forgiveness.
Kapha aggravation can lead to colds, congestion, sneezing, and allergic manifestations
as well as inertia, resistance to changes, attachment, and greed.
